Barrier isolators as an alternative to a cleanroom
St. Joseph’s Hospital, Atlanta, GA, U.S.A, 1999

Description:

  • 346 beds hospital
  • 1 glove boxe MicroSphere : 4’ x 2’ with 2 gloves and 1 antechamber; compounding aseptic unidirectional isolator in positive pressure for sterile compounding of sterile preparations in compliance with USP 797 and state board regulations
  • 1 gove boxe  ChemoSphere: 4’x 2’ with 2 gloves and 2 antechambers; compounding containment aseptic unidirectional isolator in negative pressure for chemotherapy preparations in compliance with USP 797, state board of pharmacy, OSHA and NIOSHA regulations

Conclusion:

  • The capital requirements for the 2 glove boxes were $ 35,000 which is 46 % less then the $ 65,000 required for the cleanroom.
  • The operation, maintenance and certification of the 2 gloves are $ 2,000 per year which is 80 % less than the $ 10,000 required for the cleanroom.
  • All gloves boxes are USP 797 and Georgia state board of pharmacy compliance
